Cocoon” HDL: A Biodegradable Planter for Reforestation

Short Description

This video introduces the “Cocoon”, a biodegradable planter invented in the Netherlands, designed to boost tree growth in arid regions prone to desertification. The University of Almería’s Center for the Assessment and Monitoring of Global Change is testing its effectiveness in Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park, as part of the European project Life Desert-Adapt (GreenLink).

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the Application in Specific Contexts: See how this system is being tested in Almería’s Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park, a region known for the world’s largest organic almond production, highlighting its relevance to local agriculture.
  2. Appreciate the Role of Technology in Reforestation: Understand how sensors and an online platform are used to monitor soil moisture and water filtration, providing data for effective management.
  3. Comprehend the Integrated Approach to Ecological Restoration: Realize that the project involves not only planting but also long-term socio-ecological monitoring and community engagement.
